Comic-Con 2011: ‘Vampire Diaries’ Bosses Discuss Finale Game-Changer, What It Means for Season 3

“We set up the big building blocks this season, which is Stefan is off with Klaus back on blood doing god knows what to god knows who. Damon and Elena’s relationship, their friendship has had a moment that will certainly, over time, the two of them being stuck together knowing that Stefan’s off doing god knows what and god knows where can bring them a bit closer. And Jeremy’s seeing something,” Plec says.

Williamson and Plec opened up about the returns of Kayla Ewell, who was killed off in Season 1, andMalese Jow, killed in the second season. “That was tough with those,” Williamson recalls. “We didn’t want to say goodbye to them as actresses. It took us a long time to earn it but we had to circle all the way back around and we got there.”

“We weren’t faking around. She was dead. She was as dead as it gets,” Plec says of Ewell, who played Jeremy’s then-vampire girlfriend Vicki. “It felt right for who Jeremy was with his character, his relationship with Bonnie, to reintroduce these really powerful love elements so that Bonnie could experience the consequences that the witches threatened.”

When did they realize their show was a cult/fan favorite? Kevin Williamson: “It all started with Twitter.” Julie Plec: “When Ian Somerhalder beat Robert Pattinson in a Favorite Vampire contest.”

‘The Vampire Diaries’ hoping to show off season three clip at Comic-Con

“We start shooting a week before Comic-Con but we have a wish that there might be a frame or two of footage that we might be able to show off. But we also have no idea what we’re shooting before then; it could be a complete and utter disaster. We could show up with nothing. But our plan is better than that. We’ll definitely have a nice little reel.”

OMG! Kat Graham reblogged my post! Thank you,Kat,you made me happy!

Julie Plec:

Damon and Elena are embarking on a whole new chapter.

“In that moment, Damon needed her forgiveness and her love, and she needed to give it to him. It was very pure for her. There’s a lot that happened in that moment, and season 3 is gonna be about exploring what it means to her, what it means to Damon, and certainly what it means to the Damon-Elena-Stefan relationship.”

Julie Plec Spoils About ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season Finale

“Damon, who is desperately seeking forgiveness from Elena, starts to relive moments from past mistakes made with Katherine back in 1864. As is always true with these events in Mystic Falls, things go horribly awry.”

Delena-na-na-naaaaa

“Damon and Elena’s closeness is a big obstacle in Stefan and Elena’s relationship,” said Plec. “Not because of how Stefan feels about it because he’s fully aware that Damon has feelings for Elena. It’s the decisions Damon makes and the actions Damon takes to protect Elena, which are in direct conflict often with the way Stefan would like the situation to be handled.

‘The Vampire Diaries’: the ‘dagger dilemma’ rears its head with Klaus

With the long hiatus that has been going on with “The Vampire Diaries,” we have all been given plenty of time to ponder over what exactly is going to happen when it comes to killing Klaus. The gang in Mystic Falls only know one way to kill an Original (with a very special dagger), and it is currently sitting in the heart of Elijah. If they get rid of one, the other seemingly has to live — or do they?

Speaking to Showtracker, executive producer Julie Plec confirms that this is a question that will very much be on the minds of everyone as the move forward with the final few episodes of the season:

There’s one weapon, two originals. I wonder what’s going to happen. That is their big conundrum. As soon as we get back from the hiatus, we’re going to start asking that question and seeing what our characters decide to do about it will be pretty big.”

‘The Vampire Diaries’: Julie Plec shares a few more hints on remainder of season

Of course, the following information from the Twitter Q&A does contain minor spoilers — so read on at your own risk:

  • There is going to be at least “one more flashback” this season.
  • Caroline’s character has been one of the most welcomes surprises: “Caroline having chemistry with everybody has been the best surprise to us as writers. Makes it easy to find story.”
  • As we’ve seen before, there will be death.
  • She loves both the Salvatores equally.
  • For those interested in production details, the show wraps for the season on April 15 and will return in July. Although there has been no official renewal yet, it’s pretty much a foregone conclusion in will come back.
  • She loves both the Salvatores equally.

EXCLUSIVE: Julie Plec on “Dark Place” Ahead for The Vampire Diaries

http://www.tvfanatic.com/2010/12/exclus/

Just how many werewolves are coming to Mystic Falls? Who will play Klaus? And, seriously, how many times can we expect to see Ian Somerhalder shirtless over the second half of season two?

These were just some of the questions we asked The Vampire Diaries producer Julie Plec in an exclusive interview, the first part of which we’ve excerpted below.

Overall, what can we expect when the show returns?
We’re going to come to the end of what we’re calling our werewolf chapter, which will really take that story to a really dark place and really change a lot of characters lives, not necessarily in a good way.

We are going to dig deeper into the secrets of our new witches and what Bonnie’s role is going to be in their story, and of course it’s all about the fear of the impending Klaus, and who’s going to be fighting on who’s side, who’s bond is with who, who’s going to betray whom, and is this curse going to be lifted at the hands of a sacrifice that would kill Elena. We’re full steam ahead.

Do you ever fear the show will run out of storylines?
We never worry that we’re going to run out of steam because we know we have a lot of story to tell and that story can go on and on. What’s complicated is every episode is brand new. Rather than working on a CSI or even X-Files, where each week you have this formula to build off of, it’s like we’re starting a new movie from scratch each week. It’s trying to do that at a level of consistency of quality week after week, it’s just a really daunting task.

More than anything it’s not do we have enough story, it’s how can we tell the best story possible every week in the time that we have. All of us are control freaks and perfectionists, so we kill ourselves trying to do it and I’m proud of it. Either the show will get cancelled in five years or we’ll die before one of the two things happen (laughs). We’re always going to try to make it as great as it can be.

How many more werewolves are coming to Mystic Falls?
That I can’t say, but I will say Tyler isn’t the only one, as we’ve just met Jules. Jules was talking to someone on the phone during the previous episode, and it’s quite possible that that somebody might be showing up to town pretty soon.

Will we ever see Nina Dobrev take on more than two characters/episode?
That would be so cool and so hard to do. If we were ever going to do that to that poor thing, it would have to be the storyline of the century. Who knows!

Is there a clause in Ian Somerhalder’s contract about appearing shirtless a certain number of times per month?
(Laughs.) No. It’s funny, we had a little bit of a drought of our shirtless boys this season, because we only put them shirtless when it feels right for the story. But I looked at Kevin and I was like, “everybody’s had too many clothes on for the last 6 or 7 episodes. This is wrong. So we’ll be seeing more bare-chested boys as we go into the New Year. All totally organic to the story, as always, of course (laughs).

Do you have any idea who will play Klaus?
None whatsoever. We started the casting process, we’re early in it. We have high standards, and high hopes. It’s going to be very tough to not only hold their own against Ian and Paul, but also Daniel Gillies [Elijah], who a pretty tremendous actor. We’re taking the casting very seriously and it’ll be interesting to see how it turns out.

And you can’t talk about love triangles without talking about Elena and Damon (Ian Somerhalder). The bad boy vampire has come a long from where he started in Season 1. “We’ve watched Damon’s journey as he struggled with his role as hero and leading man and the knocks that come along with that and the problems that’s given him,” says Plec. “His own personal transformation is a big part of this year and the rest of the season.” He delivered perhaps his most unselfish moment when he told Elena he loved her and then erased her memories of the confession. Plec says there wasn’t a lot of debate in the writers room about whether it was too early for such a reveal. “It felt right,” she says. “We felt like it was exactly the right time given the journey that he had just experienced with his brother when Stefan made a very profound admission. It was time for Damon to make an admission of his own.”

Although Damon is growing and he and Elena have been less combative lately, they’re not quite on equal friendship footing yet. “I think that Elena, given that she doesn’t know that he said that, there’s still a little bit more growth for Elena to return fully to friendship with Damon,” she points out. “But that path is set definitely.”
